About Armenia
Armenia is a highland country, most of it well above a thousand metres, and its monasteries are built to match: grey stone, largely unadorned, set on gorge edges and hillsides rather than inside towns. Several have stood since the early medieval centuries and some are older still.
Mount Ararat dominates the southern horizon from Yerevan although it stands across the border in Turkey. Lake Sevan, one of the largest high-altitude lakes anywhere, sits in the hills to the north-east with a peninsula church above it.

Worth Knowing Before You Go
- Armenia adopted Christianity as a state religion in 301, generally considered the earliest country to do so.
- The monasteries of Haghpat, Sanahin and Geghard, and the cathedral at Echmiadzin, are UNESCO-listed.
- Mount Ararat is the defining view from Yerevan but lies across the border in Turkey.
- Lake Sevan sits at about 1,900 metres and is among the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes in the world.
