About Europe
Europe works as a single journey in a way few regions do, because the distances are short and the connections are dense. Paris to Amsterdam, Zurich to Milan, Vienna to Prague — each is a few hours by train, and each crossing changes the language, the architecture and the hour at which people eat dinner.
That is the argument for treating it as one trip rather than several. A first journey usually strings together three or four cities and the country between them, with the Alps sitting in the middle of the map as the obvious pause.

- Most of the continent's major cities are within a few hours of one another by rail.
- The Schengen area allows travel between most participating countries without further border checks.
- High-speed rail is often quicker city centre to city centre than flying over the same distance.
- Summer daylight runs late in the northern cities, well past nine in the evening in June.
