About Georgia
Georgia sits on the southern side of the Caucasus, between the mountains and the Black Sea, and the country is mountainous almost everywhere else. Tbilisi is built into a river gorge, narrow and stacked, with sulphur springs beneath the old town that gave the city its name.
North of the capital the road climbs into the high Caucasus toward Kazbegi, where the Gergeti church stands on a ridge below a five-thousand-metre peak. The wine is not a side note here: it is made in buried clay vessels by a method that predates almost every other.

Worth Knowing Before You Go
- Georgian winemaking in buried clay qvevri is UNESCO-listed and dates back around 8,000 years.
- Mount Kazbek, above the village of Stepantsminda, reaches 5,054 metres.
- Tbilisi's old town is built over natural sulphur springs, from which the city takes its name.
- The Georgian alphabet is one of a small number of unique writing systems still in daily use and is UNESCO-listed.
