About Japan
Japan is an archipelago of thousands of islands, four of them large, running far enough north to south to cover a wide range of climate. Most journeys stay on Honshu, where Tokyo, Kyoto and the mountains between them sit within a couple of hours of one another by train.
The contrast people come for is real but it is not a contradiction. The same country keeps shrines in continuous use for well over a thousand years and runs one of the densest cities on earth. Kyoto holds the temples and gardens; Tokyo holds the scale.

Worth Knowing Before You Go
- The shinkansen has run since 1964 and connects Tokyo to Kyoto in a little over two hours.
- Kyoto was the imperial capital for more than a thousand years and holds seventeen UNESCO-listed sites.
- Cherry blossom moves north across the country over several weeks in spring, and the timing shifts each year.
- Mount Fuji, at 3,776 metres, is the highest point in Japan and is visible from Tokyo on clear days.
