About Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan is the largest landlocked country on earth, but most journeys concentrate on the south-east, where Almaty sits against the Tian Shan. The mountains rise directly behind the city, close enough that the snowline is visible from the street.
Within a few hours of the city the landscape changes completely. Big Almaty Lake sits in a glacial bowl above the treeline, the Charyn canyon is cut deep into red rock out on the steppe, and the Kolsai lakes lie in forested valleys nearer the Kyrgyz border.
