About Kenya
Kenya is where the safari idea took its modern shape, and the Maasai Mara is the reason. It is open grassland, the northern continuation of the Serengeti ecosystem, and it holds predators and grazers at a density that is hard to match anywhere else on the continent.
The other parks are quite different from it and from each other. Amboseli is flatter and drier, known for elephants standing against the bulk of Kilimanjaro across the Tanzanian border. The Rift Valley lakes draw flamingos. Samburu, in the arid north, holds species not found further south.

Worth Knowing Before You Go
- The Maasai Mara is the northern extension of Tanzania's Serengeti ecosystem.
- The wildebeest migration generally crosses into the Mara between around July and October, with timing set by rainfall rather than the calendar.
- Kilimanjaro stands across the border in Tanzania but forms the backdrop to Amboseli.
- Kenya's Great Rift Valley lake system, including Nakuru and Bogoria, is UNESCO-listed.
