About Malaysia
Malaysia comes in two pieces, separated by several hundred kilometres of the South China Sea. The peninsula, south of Thailand, holds the cities, the plantations and the west-coast islands. Sabah and Sarawak, on the island of Borneo, hold the rainforest, the cave systems and the highest mountain. They are genuinely different places rather than two halves of one.
What both share is a population layered from Malay, Chinese and Indian roots, and food is where a visitor notices it first. Kuala Lumpur is the hinge, and within a few hours of it are hill stations, old trading ports and reef islands.

Worth Knowing Before You Go
- Malaysia is divided between the peninsula and the states of Sabah and Sarawak on Borneo.
- The rainforest at Taman Negara is estimated at around 130 million years old, older than the Amazon.
- Mount Kinabalu in Sabah, at 4,095 metres, is the highest peak in the country.
- George Town in Penang and Melaka are both UNESCO-listed for their trading-port architecture.
