About Morocco
Morocco changes fast over short distances. Marrakech sits on a plain below the High Atlas; cross the mountains and within a day the land turns pre-Saharan — stone, palm oasis, then dune. North of all of it the Rif hills hold Chefchaouen, painted through in blue.
The medinas are the other constant. These are walled old cities, effectively car-free, and Fez has the largest and least altered of them. Losing your bearings inside one is not a failure of navigation; it is roughly the intended experience.

- The medinas of Fez and Marrakech are both UNESCO-listed, and Fez's is among the largest car-free urban areas in the world.
- The High Atlas reaches 4,167 metres at Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa.
- Chefchaouen's old town is painted in shades of blue and sits in the Rif mountains.
- The Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga dune fields are each a long day's drive from Marrakech or Fez.
