About Russia
Most journeys to Russia are really journeys to two cities, and the two are unalike. Moscow is the older seat of power, built in rings around the Kremlin, dense and vertical. Saint Petersburg was founded in 1703 on marshland as a deliberately European capital and laid out across islands and canals.
The distance between them is covered in about four hours by fast train. Saint Petersburg's high summer brings the white nights, when the sky never fully darkens and the city stays out in it.
