About Scandinavia
Scandinavia covers a great deal of ground across three countries, and the landscapes differ sharply between them. Norway's western coast is fjord — glacial valleys flooded by the sea, with walls rising steeply out of deep water. Sweden is flatter, heavily wooded and covered in lakes. Denmark is small, low and entirely coastal.
The cities sit on water in every case: Stockholm across fourteen islands, Copenhagen around its harbour, Bergen wedged between the mountains and the sea. This far north, summer light runs very long indeed.

Worth Knowing Before You Go
- The Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord in western Norway are UNESCO-listed.
- Stockholm is built across fourteen islands connected by more than fifty bridges.
- North of the Arctic Circle the sun does not set at all for part of the summer.
- Bergen is the usual starting point for the fjords and is linked to Oslo by a mountain railway.
