About Switzerland
Switzerland is the rare mountain country you can see properly without driving. The rail network reaches into valleys that would otherwise take a day to approach, and the trains, boats and mountain railways are timetabled to connect with one another. The journey genuinely is part of the destination here — the Bernina and Glacier lines are scenic routes in their own right.
The country changes language roughly every hundred kilometres, and the food and architecture change with it. German in Lucerne and the Bernese Oberland, French around Lake Geneva, Italian south of the Alps. For a week-long journey that variety does a lot of work.

Worth Knowing Before You Go
- Jungfraujoch, at 3,454 metres, has the highest railway station in Europe.
- Swiss rail, lake boats and most mountain railways run on one integrated timetable and are famously punctual.
- The country has four national languages: German, French, Italian and Romansh.
- Mountain weather decides what is visible from the high viewpoints, and clear days are worth rearranging plans for.
