About United Kingdom
The United Kingdom packs a great deal of variation into a small island. London sits in the south-east, a city of distinct villages grown together and still low-built across much of the centre. North and west the country empties out quickly into farmland, moor and, in Scotland, mountain.
Scotland is the sharpest change. Edinburgh is built on volcanic rock around its castle, and the Highlands begin within a few hours of it — glens, lochs and single-track roads with passing places.

Worth Knowing Before You Go
- The Palace of Westminster, the Tower of London and Edinburgh's Old and New Towns are all UNESCO-listed.
- The train from London to Edinburgh takes around four and a half hours.
- Ben Nevis in the Scottish Highlands, at 1,345 metres, is the highest point in the United Kingdom.
- Daylight varies sharply by season, from long June evenings to short December afternoons.
