About Vietnam
Vietnam runs more than sixteen hundred kilometres north to south and is narrow for most of that length, which means the country changes as you move down it. The north is limestone and terraced highland. The centre holds imperial cities and a long beach coast. The south flattens into the Mekong delta, laced with water and worked intensively.
The two ends feel like different countries. Hanoi is old and dense, built low around its lakes. Ho Chi Minh City is faster, newer in feel and laid out on a larger grid. Between them sit Hue, an imperial capital, and Hoi An, a trading port whose old town came through the twentieth century largely intact.

Worth Knowing Before You Go
- The country stretches more than 1,600 kilometres from north to south, and the two ends can be in different seasons at the same time of year.
- Ha Long Bay holds roughly 1,600 limestone islands and islets and is UNESCO-listed.
- Hoi An's old town survived the twentieth century largely unaltered and is also UNESCO-listed.
- Hue was the imperial capital under the Nguyen dynasty until 1945.
