Kashmir

Kashmir sits in a high valley between the Pir Panjal and the greater Himalaya, and almost everything about it follows from that geography. The air is thin and clear. The light arrives late over the eastern ridge and leaves early behind the western one. Water is everywhere — in the lakes at Srinagar, in the streams that come down through Pahalgam, in the snowmelt that keeps the meadows green into September.

The valley rewards slowness. Days here are shaped less by a list of sights than by weather, altitude and how far you feel like walking. A morning on Dal Lake, an afternoon in the Mughal gardens terraced into the hillside above it, an hour doing nothing at all while the light changes on the far ridge — that is the shape of the place.
