About Agra
Agra was the Mughal capital for much of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and its three great monuments all date from that stretch. The Taj Mahal was built as a tomb for Mumtaz Mahal, took over twenty years, and stands on the bank of the Yamuna facing the water.
Agra Fort, upstream, is red sandstone and served as palace and garrison at once. Fatehpur Sikri, forty kilometres west, is a complete imperial city that was abandoned within about fifteen years of being finished and stands largely intact.

- The Taj Mahal was commissioned in 1632 and took roughly twenty years to complete.
