About Andaman & Nicobar
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands sit in the Bay of Bengal, nearer to Myanmar and Indonesia than to the Indian mainland — roughly twelve hundred kilometres east of the coast. The chain is the exposed crest of a submarine mountain range, which is why the islands are hilly and forested rather than flat coral cays.
Havelock, renamed Swaraj Dweep, holds Radhanagar, the beach most people come for. Port Blair, the entry point, keeps the colonial-era Cellular Jail on a rise above the harbour.

Worth Knowing Before You Go
- The islands lie roughly 1,200 kilometres east of the Indian mainland, closer to Myanmar than to India.
- Havelock and Neil islands were renamed Swaraj Dweep and Shaheed Dweep in 2018.
- The Cellular Jail in Port Blair was built to hold political prisoners and is now a national memorial.
- Several islands, including North Sentinel, are closed to visitors to protect indigenous communities.
