About Hyderabad
Hyderabad was founded in 1591 by the Qutb Shahi dynasty and later ruled by the Nizams, and between them the two left a city quite distinct from anywhere else in southern India. The Charminar stands at the centre of the old city with the bazaars still working around its feet.
Golconda Fort, west of the centre, sits on a granite hill and was the seat of the earlier dynasty; the historic diamond trade ran through it. The city's food came out of the same court culture, and Hyderabadi biryani is the best-known result.
