About Rajasthan
Rajasthan is desert and semi-desert, and its history is one of fortified hill states rather than a single capital. That is why each city reads so differently: Jaipur planned on a grid and washed pink, Udaipur built around lakes, Jodhpur blue beneath a fort on a cliff, Jaisalmer a sandstone fort still lived in.
Ranthambore, in the east of the state, is dry forest grown up around a ruined fort, and it is among the more reliable places in India to see a wild tiger.

Worth Knowing Before You Go
- Six hill forts of Rajasthan, including Amber, Chittorgarh and Jaisalmer, are UNESCO-listed as a group.
- Jaipur's walled city was laid out on a grid in 1727 and is itself UNESCO-listed.
- Jaisalmer Fort is one of very few forts anywhere still inhabited.
- Tiger sightings at Ranthambore are likeliest in the drier months, when animals concentrate near water.
