About Sikkim
Sikkim is small and almost entirely mountain. It was an independent kingdom until 1975, and its Buddhist monasteries — Rumtek, Pemayangtse and others — belong to a Tibetan rather than an Indian plains tradition, in their architecture as much as their practice.
Kangchenjunga stands on the Nepal border and is visible from much of the state on a clear morning. East of Gangtok, Tsomgo lake sits at around three thousand seven hundred metres and freezes over in winter.
